Lafayette may be best known for its Reservoir—a beautiful open spot for boating, fishing and hiking. But it’s more than that—it’s a gathering place—friends meet to walk around the reservoir—a chance to get some exercise and catch up on each other’s lives.

The entire East Bay is cycling country, and bike enthusiasts of all ages enjoy the scenic views from the Lafayette-Moraga Trail. For commuters, Lafayette is an easy 30-minute Bart ride to San Francisco.

In the last year, many new shops have opened to serve its increasingly affluent community. Like many of its neighboring towns, there is an emphasis on independently owned businesses rather than large chain stores. Many residents think there’s a Mediterranean flavor to Lafayette—and that may be based on its superb weather, fine restaurants and love of outdoor dining.

Lafayette’s public school system is excellent. Elementary and middle schools are part of the Lafayette School District. Acalanes High School, which is consistently rated one of the best in the state, is part of the Acalanes Union High School District. Spend an afternoon or evening in Lafayette and you’ll understand why people are delighted to be living here
